Ultrafiltration (UF)

Short definitionFiltration with hollow-fibre membranes of about 0.01 micron pore size that retains suspended solids, turbidity, bacteria and viruses while letting dissolved salts through.

UF membranes operate at low pressure (0.5–3 bar) and provide microbiological safety without changing the mineral composition of the water. That is why they are common in drinking water treatment, surface water pretreatment and SDI reduction ahead of reverse osmosis. With periodic backwashing and chemical cleaning (CEB/CIP), membrane life reaches 5–7 years.

See our comparison article for how it differs from RO, and our UF product page for systems.
