Why is water critical in textiles?
In textile finishing and dyeing, water is both a raw material and a carrier. The calcium and magnesium ions that cause hardness form complexes with reactive dyes, leading to colour deviation, staining on the fabric and higher soap and detergent consumption. Iron and manganese cause yellowish tones in whites and dullness in pastel shades. Considering that a plant can consume 500–3,000 m³ of water a day, small deviations in raw water quality turn into large costs.
Typical water problems
- High hardness (often 25–45 °fH in well water in the Marmara Region): precipitates in dye baths, scale in boilers.
- Iron and manganese: colour stains, fouling of membranes and resin.
- Suspended solids and turbidity: nozzle clogging, shorter filter life.
- High conductivity (TDS): uneven dye uptake, higher boiler blowdown losses.
- Need for wastewater recovery: reuse of rinse water because of discharge limits and the cost of water.
Recommended treatment stages
| Stage | Purpose | When is it needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Sand / multimedia filtration | Removal of suspended solids and turbidity | Always with well and surface water sources |
| Iron and manganese filter (oxidation + catalytic media) | Preventing colour stains if Fe > 0.3 mg/L, Mn > 0.1 mg/L | For well water, depending on the analysis |
| Activated carbon | Removal of free chlorine and organic matter, membrane protection | Mains water and before RO |
| Softening (ion exchange) | Reducing hardness to 0–1 °fH | Dyeing, washing and boiler feed water |
| Reverse osmosis (RO) | Reducing TDS and conductivity by 95%+ | Boiler feed water, sensitive dye recipes, high-TDS wells |
| UV / dosing disinfection | Microbiological control | Systems with storage tanks |
Our sizing approach
The most common mistake in textile plants is selecting the softener for the average flow; dyeing machines filling at the same time create sudden peak flows. That is why we evaluate the peak flow, a duplex softener arrangement for uninterrupted water during regeneration, and the cost of regeneration salt together. For boiler feed water, the conductivity of the RO product water is kept in the 20–50 µS/cm band, reducing the blowdown rate and fuel consumption.
How do we proceed?
- Raw water analysis in our own laboratory (hardness, conductivity, Fe/Mn, turbidity, pH, chlorine).
- Calculation of peak and average flow based on the machine park, review of the existing lines and tank capacity.
- Selection of stages and quotation; pilot measurement if necessary.
- Installation, commissioning, operator training and a periodic maintenance contract.
