Salt Rejection

Short definitionThe performance value showing what percentage of the dissolved salts in the feed water an RO membrane retains.

Salt rejection = (1 − product conductivity / feed conductivity) × 100. A new TFC membrane provides 97–99.5% salt rejection. A decline in this value over time is a sign of membrane damage (chlorine, mechanical), an O-ring leak or fouling. The TDS of the product water is estimated by multiplying the average feed-concentrate TDS by the salt passage.
