CIP (Clean-in-Place)

Short definitionCleaning a membrane or piece of equipment by recirculating acidic/alkaline chemical solutions without dismantling it.

CIP is carried out on RO membranes when the product flow drops by 10–15% or the differential pressure rises by 15%. Acid cleaning (citric/HCl) is for inorganic scale, alkaline cleaning (NaOH + detergent) for organic and biological fouling. Properly timed CIP extends membrane life two to three times.
