When collected and treated correctly, rainwater is a free resource that significantly reduces a business's consumption of mains water. Especially in factories, logistics centres and housing projects with large roof areas, the annual volume that can be collected turns out to be far higher than expected.
The system starts with a first-flush diverter for the water coming from roof and surface lines; the first flow carrying dust, leaves and bird droppings from the roof is diverted away. This is followed by coarse filtration and a settling tank. Depending on the intended use, fine filtration and UV disinfection stages are added.
The treated water can be used for garden and landscape irrigation, toilet cistern supply, vehicle washing, cooling tower make-up and suitable processes. A backflow preventer is fitted between it and the mains line to guarantee the safety of the drinking water line.
The storage volume is sized by evaluating the annual rainfall pattern of the region together with the daily consumption of the facility. A correctly scaled rainwater line both lowers the water bill and contributes to green building certification points.
