Technical glossary· Ion exchange and softening

Resin (Ion Exchanger)

Short definitionSoftener and demineralisation media in the form of spherical polymer beads that carry exchangeable ions on their surface.

Softening uses strong acid cation (SAC) resin, with a capacity of about 1.0–1.4 equivalents/L. As a rule of thumb, 1 litre of resin removes a hardness load of 5 °fH·m³. Resin life is 8–12 years; chlorine, iron and organic fouling shorten it. For sizing, see the softener calculator.
