Technical glossary· Ion exchange and softening

Ion Exchange

Short definitionA treatment method based on the principle that ions on a resin swap places with unwanted ions in the water; the basis of softening and demineralisation.

A cation resin in the sodium form takes calcium and magnesium from the water and releases sodium in their place (softening). Resins in the hydrogen and hydroxyl forms remove all cations and anions (demineralisation, mixed bed). Once the resin is exhausted, it is regenerated with brine (NaCl) or acid/caustic.
