Technical glossary· Ion exchange and softening

Regeneration

Short definitionThe process of restoring exhausted ion exchange resin to working order by rinsing it with brine.

Regeneration in a softener consists of four steps: backwash, brine draw (slow rinse), fast rinse and brine tank refill. Each regeneration consumes 120–160 g of salt per litre of resin. Automatic valves are time- or volume-controlled (water meter); in duplex systems, one tank is in service while the other regenerates.
