The free chlorine limit in drinking water is 0.2–0.5 mg/L. Polyamide membranes suffer irreversible damage above 0.1 mg/L of chlorine; that is why activated carbon or metabisulphite dosing is essential before RO. Chloramine is more stable and requires catalytic carbon for removal.
