As water passes from top to bottom, particles down to 20–30 microns are retained in the bed. When the differential pressure rises, an automatic backwash is performed. It is the standard pretreatment before RO and UF and lowers the SDI of well and surface water. The service velocity is typically taken as 10–20 m/h.
