Activated Carbon Filter

Short definitionA filter that adsorbs free chlorine, chloramine, taste and odour, and organic compounds with porous carbon media.

Chlorine causes permanent damage to polyamide RO membranes; that is why every RO fed with mains water has activated carbon or sodium metabisulphite dosing ahead of it. Because the carbon bed is prone to bacterial growth, it needs periodic backwashing and a media change every 2–3 years. It is also used in the food sector for taste and odour.
