Alkalinity

Short definitionThe capacity of water to neutralise acid; it comes mainly from bicarbonate, carbonate and hydroxide ions and is expressed in mg/L CaCO₃.

Alkalinity determines pH buffering and the tendency to scale. Water with high alkalinity releases CO₂ in boilers and causes corrosion in condensate lines; in the RO concentrate it increases the risk of CaCO₃ precipitation. It is controlled by dealkalisation or acid dosing.
