Blowdown

Short definitionDeliberately draining water from a boiler or cooling tower to keep the salt concentration within limits.

Evaporating water leaves salts behind; as they build up, foaming, carryover and scaling begin. Blowdown rate = feed water TDS / permitted boiler TDS. When the feed water is treated with RO, blowdown drops from 10% to 2–3%, which means savings in energy, water and chemicals.
